Heringen is situated in the administrative district Hersfeld-Rotenburg in Hessen.
Construction of the plant on the premises of K+S Kali GmbH's Wintershall potash works was completed in 2009.

 
Rising fuel and electricity prices induced K+S Kali to revise the energy concept of this location in the autumn of 2004. The result was a co-operation between E. ON Energy from Waste and K+S. Now, the operation of the plant makes the potash works largely independent of natural gas, the former expensive fuel used. 50 new jobs were created.
