VKS stands for 'Verband kommunaler Abfallwirtschaft und Stadtreinigung', an association that has actively represented the interests of its members since 1912. In 2003, the association merged with the Association of Local Utilities ('Verband der kommunalen Unternehmer', VKU).
 

The VKS im VKU represents waste management related interests in the European Union, the German Federal Government and the Federal States.
 
It promotes the exchange of experience as well as basic and advanced training of qualified workers.
 
Members include municipal companies and businesses in various organisation forms, special purpose associations, administrative districts, cities and municipalities. Over 180 specialist companies, associations, institutes and private persons are also part of this supporting association.
