The waste-to-energy plant 'Müllheizkraftwerk Rothensee GmbH' is a joint project of E.ON Energy from Waste AG and the municipal works ('Städtische Werke') Magdeburg (SWM).
With the commissioning of lines 1 and 2 in 2005 and lines 3 and 4 in 2006, 40,000 households in Magdeburg now benefit from electric power generation from waste. 44,000 households are moreover supplied with district heating from the plant.
With a total capacity of 660,000 metric tons, MHKW Rothensee is one of Germany's largest waste incineration plants; it represents an important component of the waste management system in Saxony-Anhalt.
The power station moreover takes advantage of the synergetic effects of a large plant association. Good accessibility of the location of the site makes it possible to deliver waste by truck, ship and rail.
