E.ON Energy from Waste Stapelfeld GmbH is an important component of the waste management system in Hamburg and the south-east of Schleswig-Holstein. The plant was established in 1973 as the waste incineration plant 'Müllverbrennungsanlage Stapelfeld GmbH' by the administrative districts Stormarn and Herzogtum Lauenburg as well as the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

The 260,000 t/a capacity plant was built in 1977/78; it was put into service in 1979. Reconstruction work in 1997 increased the capacity of the plant to 350,000 t/a.

In the meantime, the plant provides safe waste disposal facilities for 950,000 inhabitants. As E.ON Energy from Waste Stapelfeld, the waste incineration plant 'Müllverbrennungsanlage Stapelfeld GmbH' has been part of E.ON Energy from Waste AG's plant association since 2003.
