The waste-to-energy plant (MHKW) Göppingen is located in the middle of the beautiful landscape at the base of the Swabian highlands 'Schwäbische Alb'.
Since modernisation, the municipal plant first put into operation in 1975, is equipped with a modern grate firing system and a six-stage flue gas cleaning system.
The central location of the site permits utilisation of district heating in addition to generation of electric power. District heating is supplied to a hospital ('Klinik am Eichert'), a residential area (Berfeld) as well as the nearby police academy and riot police department.
MHKW Göppingen is an important component of the waste management system of the region. In addition to disposal of the waste of the administrative district Göppingen, the plant also treats commercial waste from the whole of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg via a private waste management company.
